Hin Cheung is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Indiana University School of Optometry, where he joined in July 2021 as part of the primary care services team at the Atwater Eye Care Center. He provides clinical services while conducting research focused on diagnostic imaging techniques for eye diseases.
Dr. Cheung's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Vision Science, Indiana University School of Optometry (2021)
- Doctor of Optometry, Ferris State University Michigan College of Optometry (2014)
- Bachelor of Biomedical Science, University of Waterloo (2010)
Dr. Cheung's research primarily focuses on Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and en face imaging for glaucoma diagnostics. His work centers on using quantitative imaging metrics to analyze the retinal nerve fiber layer, with particular interest in attenuation coefficients as measures of reflectivity. His research addresses critical challenges in establishing reliable diagnostic criteria for glaucoma progression by investigating within-eye and between-subject variability in retinal imaging. This work has significant implications for improving early detection and management of glaucoma.
Analysis of Dr. Cheung's publication history (2014-2022) reveals a consistent research trajectory focused on retinal imaging techniques. Starting with refractive surgery techniques in 2014, his work quickly shifted to retinal imaging and glaucoma diagnostics. From 2015 onward, his publications consistently examine activated retinal astrocytes and Müller cells in glaucoma patients using spectral domain OCT. His most recent work (2020-2022) demonstrates increasing sophistication in analyzing imaging data to distinguish between healthy and glaucomatous eyes while accounting for natural variability in measurements.
Dr. Cheung has received notable recognition for his research:
- Irvin M. Borish Essilor Ezell Fellowship (2019)
Dr. Cheung maintains active membership in several professional organizations including the American Academy of Optometry, American Optometric Association, The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Indiana Optometry Association, and the Stonebelt Society. Prior to his current position, he completed a residency in ocular disease at Indiana University School of Optometry in 2015 and worked part-time as an adjunct clinical lecturer while completing his Ph.D. His clinical expertise combined with research focus positions him at the intersection of patient care and scientific investigation in academic optometry.
Dr. Cheung's work is centered at the Atwater Eye Care Center at Indiana University, where he integrates clinical practice with vision science research. His ongoing investigations into quantitative imaging metrics for glaucoma diagnostics represent important contributions to advancing precision in eye care.
