Prof. Hilleke Hulshoff Pol is a prominent neuroscientist at Utrecht University's Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, leading the Brain Plasticity Group within the Department of Experimental Psychology. She also holds a Research Professorship in Precision Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (USA) and an affiliated professorship at UMC Utrecht's Department of Psychiatry. Her work focuses on genetic and environmental influences on brain structure throughout lifespan development, with particular emphasis on schizophrenia, neurodevelopmental disorders, and prenatal brain dynamics.
Education: PhD in Neuroscience (Utrecht University, 1995), MSc in Psychophysiology (Utrecht University, 1987), and postdoctoral training at UC San Diego (1988-1989). She has held progressively senior roles since 1993, including leading major initiatives like the ENIGMA consortium and the Dynamics of Youth (DoY) project.
Research interests span neuroimaging techniques (MRI, deep learning), brain plasticity, and translational psychiatry. Recent articles emphasize longitudinal studies, prenatal brain segmentation using AI, and genetic correlates of cortical thinning in schizophrenia. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to mental health and well-being (SDG 3).
Key collaborations include the ENIGMA consortium (global brain imaging genetics), the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, and the YOUth cohort. She leads teams investigating brain-age prediction, synaptic transmission in twins, and societal trajectories of youth development through multi-disciplinary approaches.
