Hilde Coffe

Hilde Coffe is a Professor in Politics at the University of Bath (since 2018), affiliated with the School of Politics, Languages & International Studies. She holds an honorary research position at Victoria University of Wellington (2018–2019) and previously worked at institutions including the Free University of Brussels (VUB), Utrecht University, and Victoria University of Wellington. She has been a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley, the University of Sydney, and the Weizenbaum Institute (Berlin), among others.

Her research focuses on political behavior, public opinion, political representation, and gender in politics. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 5 (Gender Equality) and 13 (Climate Action). Recent projects include examining financial barriers to women’s political representation, generational attitudes toward gender equality, and public opinion dynamics on climate change.

Professor Coffe has received a Visiting Fellowship at the Weizenbaum Institute (2023). She leads or co-leads multiple grants, including the UKRI-funded 'Money Matters: Financial Barriers to Women’s Political Representation' (2025–2026) and the British Academy-supported 'Gender and attitudes towards gender equality: A generational backlash?' (2025–2026). She also collaborates on projects analyzing gender equality, electoral systems, and political representation in Europe and beyond.

Her academic contributions include over 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, with a focus on gender gaps in political ambition, climate change attitudes, and the role of social media in political campaigns. She actively participates in public lectures and editorial roles, such as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Political Science.
