Hilary Silver is a Professor of Sociology, International Affairs, and Public Policy and Public Administration at George Washington University (GW), where she has been since 2017. She is also Professor Emerita of Sociology and Urban Studies at Brown University. Her research focuses on social exclusion, urban inequality, homelessness, and xenophobia. Silver has held visiting appointments at institutions globally, including the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris) and the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute for Advanced Study (India). She serves on the Executive Committee of the Eastern Sociological Society and chairs the GW University Seminar on 'Europe Since Covid-19.'
Her notable works include Left-Wing Xenophobia in Europe (2021) and Homelessness and the Coronavirus (2023). She has received awards such as the Lynd Award for Lifetime Achievement (2016) and Fulbright Scholarships to France, Germany, and Israel. Silver has also produced documentary films like Southside and Direction Home, funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities.
Her academic leadership includes editorships of City & Community and affiliations with Harvard’s Minda de Gunzberg Center and the Ash Center at the Kennedy School. Silver’s research bridges urban sociology, policy analysis, and global social issues, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to inequality and social justice.
