Blake R. Silver is Associate Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at George Mason University. He also serves as Director of Educational Pathways & Faculty Development in the Honors College and Director of the Education & Health Research Hub in the Center for Social Science Research. His work bridges sociological theory with practical applications in higher education settings.
Dr. Silver's research focuses on culture, social stratification, and higher education, addressing questions about the role of colleges and universities in contesting and reproducing inequality. His work examines educational pathways, parent and family involvement in education, transition to adulthood, and experiences of students from immigrant families. His research has been supported by the American Sociological Association, the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, ACPA-College Student Educators International, and other prominent organizations.
His publications include three major books: 'The Cost of Inclusion' (2020), 'Supporting College Students of Immigrant Origin' (2024, co-edited), and 'Degrees of Risk' (2024). His recent articles explore topics such as major transitions, student-faculty interactions for immigrant students, first-generation student experiences, and LGBTQ+ student concerns during the senior year.
