Blake Silver is an Associate Professor of Sociology at George Mason University's Department of Sociology and Anthropology. He serves as Director of Educational Pathways & Faculty Development in the Honors College and Director of the Education & Health Research Hub in the Center for Social Science Research. His research focuses on higher education's role in inequality, cultural reproduction, and immigrant student experiences. He holds a PhD from the University of Virginia, where he was a Jefferson Fellow.
Education: PhD in Sociology (University of Virginia), MA in Sociology and Higher Education, BA in English (George Mason University). Courses taught include Higher Education and Society, Research Methods, and The Transition to Adulthood.
Research interests center on college students' educational pathways, second-generation immigrant transitions, and campus environments. His 2020 book The Cost of Inclusion examines inequality perpetuation through student conformity, while his 2024 book Degrees of Risk addresses insecurity in public universities.
Recent publications analyze major changes, LGBQ+ identity navigation, and gender disparities in academic fields. Awards include Jefferson Fellow support. He advises dissertations on military-connected students and immigrant-origin experiences.
