Hilary Mairs is a Prof Reader and Head of Division (NMSW) in the Department of Nursing & Midwifery at the University of Manchester. She serves as Director of Postgraduate Education and Chair of the Board of Trustees for Connect Support. Her academic journey includes a PhD (2009), MSc in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Psychosis (2000), and BA(Hons) in Social and Educational Psychology (1989).
Research focuses on psychosocial interventions for psychosis negative symptoms, staff training in mental health settings, and dementia care education. Key contributions include systematic reviews on healthcare professional training and caregiver wellbeing.
Teaching spans APIMH PSIp pathway programs, with supervision across undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD levels. Awards include Senior Fellowship (HEA) and Chartered Psychologist (BPS). She collaborates on robotics and artificial intelligence initiatives through the RAI Centre. Current projects explore digital futures and sustainable development goals in mental health.
Publications highlight innovations in mental health education, behavioral activation, and caregiver support strategies. Her work intersects clinical practice, policy, and technology to enhance mental health outcomes globally.
