Hilary Francis is an Assistant Professor of Latin American history at Northumbria University, holding a Vice Chancellor's Research Fellowship since 2018. Her research focuses on oral history methodologies, interdisciplinary projects, and 20th-century political conflicts in Nicaragua. She leads a major oral history project on ADHD in the UK while maintaining expertise in US-Latin America relations.
Her doctoral work produced an oral history of Nicaragua's Contra War. Current research bridges historical analysis with contemporary health narratives through collaborations with diverse academic and community partners.
Notable publications include analyses of US development programs in 1950s Nicaragua, decolonial approaches to oral history practices, and critical examinations of the Sandinista Revolution's legacy. Her work frequently intersects environmental history, political conflict, and transnational policy impacts.
Francis has pioneered innovative research partnerships linking historical scholarship with modern public health discourse. She has contributed to debates about memory politics, development ethics, and the application of oral testimony in reconstructing marginalized histories.
