Jaymie Heilman is a Professor in the Department of History, Classics, & Religion at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Arts. Her research focuses on Latin American and Caribbean history, with specializations in indigenous political activism, radical politics in twentieth-century Peru, and the history of illicit drugs. She employs oral history and archival research methodologies.
Her major publications include Before the Shining Path (2010) examining rural Ayacucho's political dynamics leading to Peru's civil war, and a co-authored biography, Now Peru is Mine (2016), tracing the activism of indigenous leader Manuel Llamojha Mitma. Current research explores Latin America's drug history from the 19th to 20th centuries.
Teaching emphasizes Latin American history, drug studies, and the intersection of race, class, and gender. Courses include DRUGS IN MODERN GLOBAL HISTORY and DRUG TRADES AND DRUG WARS IN LATIN AMERICA. She has supervised graduate research on topics like Colombian drug history and Nicaraguan Contra movements.
