Hidetaka Hirota is Associate Professor and Thomas Garden Barnes Chair in Canadian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, where he serves as Co-Director of the Canadian Studies Program. He is affiliated with multiple research centers including the Asian American Research Center, Berkeley Interdisciplinary Migration Initiative, Center for the Study of Law and Society, and Center for Japanese Studies. Hirota also holds leadership positions as Vice President and President-Elect of the Immigration and Ethnic History Society.

Hirota specializes in 19th-century North American history with emphasis on U.S. immigration law, transnational migration patterns, and the development of nativist policies. Current book projects investigate foreign contract labor systems and Japanese immigrant experiences within evolving U.S. immigration restrictions.

Recent work analyzes regional enforcement disparities, racial dimensions of border administration, and transnational labor networks across the Pacific Northwest and Atlantic seaboard.
