Herman G. van de Werfhorst

Herman G. van de Werfhorst is a Full-time Professor of Sociology at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, currently on leave from the University of Amsterdam where he served as full professor from 2007-2022. He maintains active affiliations as a visiting fellow at WZB Berlin Social Science Center and previously served on the Dutch Education Council until 2022.

His academic foundation includes a PhD from the Institute for Advanced Social Research (ICS) at the University of Nijmegen (2001), following earlier research fellowships at Nuffield College, Oxford.

Van de Werfhorst's research program centers on educational inequalities through the lenses of social stratification, mobility, and labor market dynamics. He specializes in analyzing how socioeconomic status, migration background, and gender intersect to shape school trajectories, workforce outcomes, and civic participation using advanced quantitative methods and large-scale comparative datasets.

His 2024-2025 publications reveal a concentrated focus on educational tracking mechanisms, pandemic-related disruptions to equity, cross-national meritocracy analyses, and youth political attitudes - predominantly utilizing Dutch panel studies and 40-country comparative frameworks that highlight methodological rigor in educational sociology.
