Herman G. Van De Werfhorst

Herman G. Van De Werfhorst is a Full-time Professor in the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute (EUI), Florence. He is currently on leave from the University of Amsterdam. His research focuses on inequalities in education, labor markets, and civic engagement, with emphasis on socioeconomic, migration, and gender disparities. He co-leads two longitudinal projects: PRIMS (Netherlands primary-to-secondary school transitions) and ADKS (Adolescent Panel Study on Democratic Core Values and School Careers).

Van De Werfhorst employs comparative and longitudinal research designs, analyzing data from transitions in primary to secondary education and adolescent democratic values. His 2024-2025 publications address topics like pandemic effects on school tracking, meritocracy debates, preschool privatization impacts, and adolescent freedom of speech dynamics. He supervises PhD researchers including Alfonso Langastro, Dijne Haaker, and Joanna Przybys.
