Dr. Herman Fennell II is an Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at Hampton University, affiliated with the School of Science. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Howard University and has completed postdoctoral training at the University of California, Davis. His expertise spans cancer biology and plant stress resistance, with a focus on genetic engineering and bioactive compounds.
Education:
- Ph.D., Molecular Biology, Howard University (2005-2012)
- M.S., Animal Health Science, North Carolina A&T State University (2000-2003)
- B.Sc., Animal Science, North Carolina A&T State University (1994-1999)
Research Interests: Dr. Fennell investigates the molecular basis of breast/prostate cancers and develops plant-derived compounds with anti-carcinogenic properties. His work includes discovering how RACK1 proteins mediate stress resistance in plants and inhibiting ErbB receptor pathways in cancer. He has trained over 50 students across undergraduate, graduate, and medical programs.
Scientific Contributions: His research bridges plant biology and oncology, with notable findings on RACK1 signaling in rice and Arabidopsis, LRRC24 tumor suppressor regulation, and anti-prostate cancer plant compounds.
Awards: Recognized for teaching excellence (Hampton University Favorite Professor Award, Professor of the Month) and research fellowships (NIH T32, ASPB Travel Awards). His work is supported by grants from NIH, NSF, and Smithsonian.
Teaching & Mentorship: Teaches courses in molecular/cellular biology, cancer biology, and botany. Advises students on research projects and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration.
