Hemayet Ullah

Hemayet Ullah, Ph.D., is a Professor of Biology at Howard University's College of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on cellular signal transduction pathways with a particular emphasis on RACK1 proteins, plant G-protein signaling, and antiviral drug development. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (2002) and has postdoctoral training from NIH/NIEHS.

• Education: BS in Plant Science (University of Dhaka, 1988); MS in Biology (North Carolina State University, 1996); MS from International University of Japan (1990); PhD in Molecular Biology (UNC Chapel Hill, 2002).

Research interests include:
1. RACK1-mediated signaling in plants and viruses
2. Plant stress responses (salt, oxidative stress)
3. Development of host-targeted antiviral drugs
4. Cancer metastasis inhibition via RACK1 inhibition

His lab has filed five patents, including host-targeted antivirals and methods to combat cancer cell migration. Collaborations include Georgetown University's Dr. Dakshanamurthy for antiviral drug development.

Key research outcomes include identifying RACK1's role in chlorophyll degradation, salt stress tolerance in rice, and inhibiting coronavirus replication through 5’-PolyU targeting.
