Herbert Waite

Herbert Waite is a Distinguished Professor of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of bioadhesion in marine organisms, particularly mussels and sandcastle worms, and translating these insights into synthetic materials. He holds a B.A. from Harvard College (1971) and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Duke University (1976), followed by postdoctoral work at the University of Copenhagen. Before joining UCSB in 1998, he was a professor at the University of Delaware for 12 years.

Waite’s lab investigates how marine organisms adhere to surfaces underwater, leveraging interdisciplinary collaborations across seven UCSB programs, including Biomolecular Science & Engineering and Materials Science. He co-leads IRG-1 of the NSF-funded Materials Research Science & Engineering Center (MRSEC) at UCSB. His work has led to advancements in biomaterials, such as self-healing polymers and mussel-inspired adhesives.

Key research interests include catechol chemistry, protein coacervation, and the mechanical properties of biological materials like squid beaks and shark egg cases. His lab has identified novel adhesive proteins in mussels and pioneered studies on underwater adhesion mechanisms. Notable achievements include election as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2009).

Waite advises multiple graduate students and postdocs, focusing on projects such as byssal thread mechanics, mussel plaque dynamics, and synthetic biomaterials. His lab’s collaborations span departments, emphasizing a systems-level approach to bioadhesion science.
