J. Herbert Waite

Herbert Waite is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). His research focuses on understanding the biochemistry and biophysics of marine adhesives, particularly the underwater adhesion mechanisms of mussels and other marine organisms. His work bridges multiple disciplines, including biochemistry, materials science, and engineering.

Waite earned his A.B. in Biochemistry from Harvard University (1971), Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Duke University (1976), and held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Copenhagen (1976–1978) and the University of Connecticut (1979–1981). He served as a Professor at the University of Delaware (1991–1998) before joining UCSB in 1999, where he holds the Harrington Chair in Marine Biochemistry.

His research group investigates how marine organisms produce durable adhesives, such as mussel byssal threads, which adhere to wet surfaces. Key projects include characterizing adhesive proteins, studying iron-mediated cross-linking, and developing bioinspired materials for biomedical and engineering applications. Collaborations span UCSB departments, including Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, and Physics.

Waite’s scientific contributions include seminal work on mussel foot proteins, squid beak mechanics, and polyelectrolyte complexation. His lab has pioneered methods like laser mass spectrometry and atomic force microscopy to study biomolecular materials. Notable awards include the Harrington Chair and fellowships from ONR, NSF, and PHS.

Advising spans over a dozen graduate students and postdocs, with research topics ranging from mussel plaque mechanics to synthetic adhesives. The lab’s interdisciplinary approach addresses challenges in biomaterials design, bioengineering, and environmental adaptation.
