Herbert Northcott is a Professor in the Department of Sociology within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta, where he has been a faculty member since 1976. His career spans over four decades of dedicated research and teaching in sociological subfields addressing critical human experiences across the lifespan.
His educational foundation includes:
- BA in Sociology (minor in Psychology) from the University of Manitoba
- MS in Sociology from Brigham Young University
- PhD in Sociology (minors in Anthropology and Statistics) from the University of Minnesota
Dr. Northcott's research program centers on population-level health dynamics, gerontological transitions, and end-of-life processes. His methodological expertise in survey research and census data analysis has produced foundational texts including the fourth edition of "Dying and Death in Canada" (co-authored with Donna Wilson) and contributions to the seventh through ninth editions of "Aging and Society: Canadian Perspectives" (with Mark Novak). His work uniquely bridges academic rigor with practical applications through extensive consultation for Alberta Health and Wellness.
His distinguished service includes recognition through the Killam Annual Professorship.

Academic leadership defines his career trajectory, having served as Associate Chair for both Graduate and Undergraduate Studies, Director of the Population Research Laboratory, and briefly as Interim Chair. He has directly mentored thousands through teaching 12,000 students across diverse courses including SOC473 (Sociology of Death and Dying), SOC375 (Sociology of Aging), and SOC100 (Introduction to Sociology), while shaping policy through government consultations at multiple administrative levels.
