Dr Herbary Cheung (he/dia/เขา/佢) is a Lecturer in Gender Studies at the Malaysia School of Arts and Social Sciences, Monash University. With academic training as a feminist sociologist and Southeast Asianist, he focuses on knowledge co-production in ethnographic research. His educational background includes a PhD in Sociology and Social Policy from The Education University of Hong Kong (HKPFS awardee), MPhil in Sociology, and joint BA degrees in Sociology and Southeast Asian Studies.

Herbary's research explores gendered migration, family dynamics, intersectionality, and health stigma, particularly among Southeast Asian migrant communities in Hong Kong. His recent publications include two monographs addressing stigmatized motherhood and migration experiences. He has contributed methodological innovations in intersectional ethnography and received awards including the GenSeM Best Article Award (2024) and Ernst Mach Grant (2022).

As an active academic, Herbary serves as Associate Editor for Humanities & Social Sciences Communications, Editorial Board Member for International Journal of Qualitative Methods, and examiner for South African tertiary education research. He co-founded the first refugee-led organization in Hong Kong and leads research projects on Southeast Asian migration decisions to Hong Kong.
