Henry Van Ingen (1833-1898) founded Vassar College's Art Department in 1865, serving as its sole professor for three decades. Trained at The Hague Academy, he specialized in landscape painting while establishing comprehensive art history and studio programs.
He pioneered art education methods using plaster casts for drawing instruction and led student painting excursions. Van Ingen curated Vassar's early art collection, emphasizing European works and pedagogical materials.
His legacy includes paintings preserved in Vassar's Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center and the Van Ingen Art Library addition to Taylor Hall.
