Henry T. Greely is the Deane F. and Kate Edelman Johnson Professor of Law and Professor by courtesy of Genetics at Stanford University, where he directs the Center for Law and the Biosciences. His career spans prestigious clerkships, government service, and litigation before joining Stanford in 1985. He holds leadership roles in major bioethics initiatives, including chairing committees for the California stem cell research advisory board and the Earth BioGenome Project.
Greely's research examines ethical, legal, and social dimensions of emerging biotechnologies. Key areas include:
- Genetics and reproduction: Ethics of embryo selection, artificial gametes, and CRISPR-based human editing.
- Neuroethics: Co-chairing NIH's BRAIN Initiative Neuroethics Work Group.
- Stem cell governance: Regulatory frameworks for research and clinical applications.
He has authored influential books synthesizing these themes, notably predicting shifts in human reproduction paradigms. His lab leads interdisciplinary work bridging law, medicine, and biotechnology.
