Dr. Henry L. Wong is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Minnesota's College of Pharmacy, where he also serves as Director of Pharmacology and Biomarkers at the Institute for Therapeutics Discovery and Development (ITDD). With a PhD in Biology/Immunology from Case Western Reserve University/Cleveland Clinic Foundation and a BSc in Biology from Brooklyn College, his research bridges pharmacology, microbiome science, and cancer diagnostics.
Dr. Wong's research focuses on the intersection of gut microbiome, metabolic disorders, and cancer. His work explores how microbial metabolites influence insulin sensitivity, obesity, and gastrointestinal disorders, with significant contributions to understanding the role of specific bacteria like Ruminococcus gnavus in irritable bowel syndrome. He has also made substantial contributions to cancer diagnostics through circulating tumor DNA analysis and multi-analyte blood tests for early cancer detection.
His publication record shows consistent productivity with over 460 publications spanning from 1975 to 2025, with recent work emphasizing the therapeutic potential of gut microbiome modulation for metabolic diseases and novel approaches to cancer detection. His research has appeared in high-impact journals including Nature Communications, Cell Host & Microbe, Science, and JAMA Internal Medicine.
Dr. Wong's scientific contributions span several key areas including gut microbiome research, cancer diagnostics, metabolic disorders, and pharmacological interventions. His recent work has particularly focused on microbial metabolites like tryptamine and phenethylamine and their effects on metabolic health.
- Developed novel approaches for early cancer detection using circulating tumor DNA
- Elucidated mechanisms by which gut microbiota influences metabolic syndrome and diabetes
- Discovered pathogenic roles of specific bacteria in gastrointestinal disorders
- Investigated vaccine safety profiles in elderly populations
- Explored pharmacological interventions for obesity and metabolic disorders
Dr. Wong's laboratory work focuses on pharmacological approaches to modulate the gut microbiome for therapeutic benefit, with particular emphasis on obesity, diabetes, and gastrointestinal disorders. His team employs multi-omics approaches to understand host-microbe interactions and their implications for human health.
