Dr Henry Jones is an Associate Professor in Law at Durham Law School and an Associate Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study. His research focuses on the history and spatiality of international law, exploring colonial origins of legal concepts and contemporary spatial challenges like borders and territorial disputes. He holds administrative roles including Deputy Dean (Education) and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Durham Law School, and leads initiatives in global justice and border research through IBRU and Durham ARCTIC.
His teaching spans international law, legal history, and maritime law, emphasizing research-led pedagogy to equip students with self-directed legal inquiry skills. He supervises PhD students in critical legal theory, colonialism, and interdisciplinary law studies.
Research interests include legal geography, post-colonial critiques, feminist legal theory, and the intersection of law with humanities disciplines. Current projects examine how international law constructs spatial frameworks in maritime and outer space contexts. He has presented at global conferences like the Law and Society Association and co-convened the 2023 Critical Legal Conference.
Publications span over a decade, addressing colonial legal history, maritime boundaries, and the theoretical foundations of international law. His work bridges legal scholarship with practical policy through IBRU’s border dispute consultations.
