Ari Jerrems

Dr. Ari Jerrems is a Senior Lecturer in Political Science and International Relations at the School of Social Sciences, The University of Western Australia. He has specific expertise in critical approaches to security, international relations, and political geography, with a focus on border politics and their colonial and postcolonial dimensions.

His academic journey includes a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Australian National University and a PhD in Politics from Monash University. Prior to joining UWA, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at ANU working on "The Cartography of Peace" project.

Dr. Jerrems' research focuses on how notions of territory and political space are understood, enacted and experienced through bordering practices. He is particularly interested in the colonial and postcolonial histories of borders and their everyday, urban and infrastructural dimensions. His recent work has theorized colonial afterlives, the politics of neighboring, political infrastructure, and advanced research on International Urban Politics.

He currently serves as co-convener of the Australian Critical Border Studies Network and previously convened the Political Geography Study Group of the Institute of Australian Geographers. Dr. Jerrems is open to supervising PhD students in his areas of research expertise.

His scholarly contributions include the book "The Spatial Limits of Political Community: Bordering the Neighbour in Urban Spain" published by Bristol University Press in 2025, along with numerous articles exploring the intersections of border politics, security, and urban space. His work demonstrates a consistent focus on decolonial approaches to international relations and critical examinations of spatial practices in global politics.

Dr. Jerrems has engaged with broader audiences through activities such as the "Dr. Ari Jerrems on International Urban Politics" podcast (2021) and the blog post "Henri Lefebvre And The Time-Spaces Of Rebellion" (2019), demonstrating his commitment to public scholarship.
