Henry F. Frierson, Jr., M.D. is a Professor of Pathology and Director of Cytopathology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. With decades of experience in academic pathology, Dr. Frierson has established himself as a leading expert in cytopathology and prostate cancer research.
Dr. Frierson received his B.S. from Davidson College in 1977 and his M.D. from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1981. He completed his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Virginia from 1981-1985. His educational background provided the foundation for his subsequent specialization in cytopathology and molecular cancer research.
Dr. Frierson's research primarily focuses on mouse models of prostate cancer, where he has characterized the phenotypes of numerous genotypes with genetic alterations involving PTEN, MYC, TGFBR2, SMAD2, APC, and AKT. His work bridges basic science with clinical applications, particularly in understanding cancer progression mechanisms. He has also conducted international volunteer pathology services in St. Lucia, Peru, Belize, and Nicaragua, demonstrating commitment to global health initiatives.
His publication record spans nearly four decades, with recent work emphasizing molecular mechanisms in adenoid cystic carcinoma and prostate cancer. The research shows a clear trajectory from diagnostic pathology toward molecular oncology, with increasing focus on genetic alterations and their clinical implications. His 2022 publication on MYB and MYBL1 rearrangements represents the current direction of his work in cancer genomics.
Dr. Frierson maintains active clinical service in both Cytopathology and Surgical Pathology at UVA Health. His work demonstrates how academic pathology integrates diagnostic expertise with cutting-edge research to advance cancer understanding and treatment.
