Anne M. Mills

Anne M. Mills is an Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She completed her medical education at the University of Virginia (2004-2008), residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Stanford School of Medicine (2008-2012), and a fellowship in Cytopathology at the University of Virginia Department of Pathology (2013-2014).

Her clinical expertise lies in general surgical pathology with a specialization in gynecological pathology and cytopathology. Her research focuses on molecular and immunohistochemical techniques to enhance cancer diagnosis and prognostication, particularly in uterine neoplasia, gynecologic hereditary cancer syndromes, and HPV-related malignancies.

Recent publications highlight her work on immune checkpoint molecules like PD-L1, LAG-3, and TIM-3 in gynecologic cancers, their role in tumor resistance to immunotherapy, and molecular mechanisms such as mismatch repair deficiency and MHC Class I loss. These studies span endometrial, cervical, vulvar, and ovarian carcinomas, often in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
