Henry E. Brady is the Dean of the Goldman School of Public Policy and holds the Class of 1941 Monroe Deutsch Professorship in Political Science and Public Policy at UC Berkeley. He earned his PhD in Economics and Political Science from MIT in 1980. His research focuses on electoral politics, political participation, social welfare policy, and methodological innovation. He has authored influential books such as Voice and Equality and Rethinking Social Inquiry, and has served as president of the American Political Science Association.
Brady’s work spans academic leadership, policy analysis, and institutional governance. He directed UC’s Survey Research Center from 1998–2009 and has advised governmental bodies like the Office of Management and Budget. His awards include Fellowships from the American Academy of Arts & Sciences (2003) and AAAS (2006).
His recent research explores declining institutional trust, digital civic engagement, and the political implications of economic inequality. Key themes in his publications include the impact of polarization on governance, the role of surveys in democratic accountability, and the challenges of big data in political science.
Brady’s contributions extend to public policy debates on higher education funding, voting technology, and welfare reform. His interdisciplinary approach bridges quantitative methods with qualitative insights, emphasizing rigorous yet accessible scholarship.
