Professor Henrik Jönsson serves as Director of the Sainsbury Laboratory and Professor of Computational Morphodynamics at the University of Cambridge, where he bridges theoretical physics, computational modeling, and plant biology within the School of the Biological Sciences and Department of Plant Sciences. His leadership position places him at the forefront of interdisciplinary plant science research.
Henrik received his Masters (1997) and PhD (2002) in Theoretical Physics from Lund University, working in the Complex Systems group under Bo Söderberg. He conducted post-doctoral research at Caltech's Division of Biology in the Barbara Wold Laboratory with Eric Mjolsness. He became Assistant Professor at Lund University's Computational Biology and Biological Physics group in 2008, joined the Sainsbury Laboratory Cambridge University (SLCU) as a group leader in 2011, was appointed Professor of Computational Morphodynamics and Associate Director in 2014, and assumed the Director role in 2020.
Professor Jönsson's research centers on developing Computational Morphodynamics models at the cellular level to describe multicellular plant tissues, particularly the shoot apical meristem. His work integrates computational modeling with experimental biology to understand how gene regulatory networks, hormone transport and signaling, cell growth and division, and mechanical properties interact during morphogenesis. His laboratory emphasizes iterative evaluation of models against new experimental data, primarily from live microscopy.
His publications reveal consistent focus on plant morphogenesis mechanisms, with recent work exploring mechanical growth models of flower development, root hair growth phases, and the integration of single-nucleus transcriptomics with spatial modeling. His research demonstrates how computational approaches can unravel complex interactions between molecular signaling and physical forces in plant development.
Professor Jönsson serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of in silico Plants and as an academic editor for PLoS ONE and the Journal of Theoretical Biology, contributing significantly to the advancement of computational approaches in plant sciences.
