Prof. Henriette Gunkel holds a Professorship in Media Studies at Ruhr University Bochum, focusing on transformations of audiovisual media with emphasis on Gender and Queer Theory. She has served as a Lecturer at Goldsmiths College (University of London), Project Leader at the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies, and held visiting roles at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Her career includes extensive postdoctoral research in South Africa and Germany, and she remains an Associated Senior Fellow at BIGSAS, Bayreuth.
Research interests span media theory, postcolonial studies, and intersectional approaches to visual and audiovisual media. Her work interrogates how gender, queer frameworks, and decolonial perspectives shape media representation and cultural narratives.
Prior roles include temporary professorships in African literature, editorial board memberships, and leadership in collaborative research projects on media spaces and future concepts. She maintains active international academic collaborations across Europe, Africa, and the US.
