Henni Alava is an Academy Research Fellow at the Unit of Social Research, Tampere University, affiliated with the Tampere Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Studies. Her work focuses on Ugandan society, religious practices, citizenship dynamics, and post-welfare state analysis. Alava holds a Research Fellow academic rank and has conducted extensive fieldwork in Northern Uganda, examining topics such as religious-political intersections, post-conflict societies, and ethical research practices.

- Citizenship studies with a focus on Uganda's socio-political context
- Medical humanities and healthcare governance in Nordic welfare systems

Active in media outreach, she discussed her research on Finland's New Children's Hospital in Medical Humanities (2025) and presented public lectures on topics like youth crime and welfare critique.
Her research network spans 15+ countries with notable collaborations in Uganda, Finland, and the UK. Alava advocates for 'slow scholarship' practices and has contributed to ethics guidelines for ethnographic research in Tieteessä tapahtuu (2024).
