Henk J.M. Swagten is a Full Professor within the Physics of Nanostructures (FNA) group at the Applied Physics department of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He holds dual roles in Applied Physics and Science Education. His research focuses on spintronics, layered magnetic structures, and their industrial applications in electronic devices. He has received a VICI grant from NWO to advance research in spin transport, magneto-resistive materials, and nanostructuring techniques.
Academically, Swagten earned his PhD with honors from TU/e's Faculty of Applied Physics (1987-1990) as a Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) fellow. He conducted research at the University of Notre Dame in 1991. Currently, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of NTVN, the Netherlands Physics Society's journal.
His research interests span magnetic semiconductors, domain wall dynamics, and magnonics. Recent work includes studies on antiferromagnetic hysteresis, skyrmion control via ion irradiation, and electrical manipulation of interlayer interactions. Over 338 publications demonstrate his prolific output across journals like Physical Review B and Nano Letters.
Swagten has advised 123 supervised works and organized academic events such as the 2020 ICAB Conference. His research group collaborates internationally, focusing on spin-based technologies with applications in next-generation memory devices and nanoelectronics.
