Hemant Shah is the Helen Firstbrook Franklin Professor of Journalism at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, with affiliations to the Asian American Studies Program, Center for South Asia, and Global Studies Program. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on mass media, race and ethnicity, critical and cultural approaches to mass communication, qualitative inquiry, and international communication.
- Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Indiana University
- M.A. in Communication Studies from Purdue University
- B.A. in Communication and Sociology from University of California-San Diego
Shah’s research examines mass media’s role in social change processes, including national development, cultural identity construction, racial anxieties, and social movements. His work spans U.S. and international contexts, with fieldwork in India and Uganda.
He has authored/co-authored three books: The Production of Modernization (2011), Newspaper Coverage of Interethnic Conflict (2004), and Reorienting Global Communication (2010). His research appears in journals like Communication Theory, Asian Journal of Communication, and The Communication Review.
