Hemang Desai is a Professor and Distinguished Chair in Accounting at the Department of Accounting, Cox School of Business, Southern Methodist University. He has served as Department Chair and teaches strategic financial reporting courses.

Research Interests focus on interdisciplinary capital markets research in accounting and finance, including:
- Role of short sellers in capital markets
- Reputational consequences of financial misreporting
- Performance of money managers and analysts
- Impact of corporate restructuring (spin-offs, mergers)
- Earnings quality and information asymmetry
Publications span top journals in Accounting and Finance, with recurring themes in short selling dynamics, earnings quality analysis, and capital market efficiency. Recent work (2013-2016) includes studies on employee options, bank capital risk, and mutual fund strategies.
