Dr Hemalatha Varadhan is a Senior Staff Specialist at Hunter New England Health and the Director of Microbiology at NSW Health Pathology, John Hunter Hospital. She is affiliated with the University of Newcastle through her collaboration with the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI).
Her research focuses on rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and health economics. She is actively involved in translational diagnostics, microbial genomics, and molecular epidemiology, with current projects including metagenomics in prosthetic joint infections and health economic analysis of diagnostic assays.
