Helim Aranda-Espinoza is an Associate Professor in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland. His research focuses on mechanobiology, exploring how cells respond to mechanical forces in both healthy and diseased states, particularly in the context of endothelial cells, neutrophils, and cancer cells. He leads the Cell Biophysics Laboratory, which applies principles from physics and engineering to study biological systems quantitatively. His work spans topics such as cell migration, membrane mechanics, and the interplay between mechanical forces and cellular signaling pathways.
Dr. Aranda-Espinoza’s academic career includes teaching courses like Cell Motility and Biophysics of Cellular Movements. He has advised numerous graduate students, including Kimberly Stroka (PhD 2011), Leann Norman (PhD 2010), and Carlos Luna, many of whom have gone on to postdoctoral positions or academic roles. His lab has contributed to understanding how substrate stiffness influences cell behavior, neutrophil transmigration mechanisms, and the role of cholesterol in cell mechanics.
Recent research highlights include studies on macrophage mechanosensitivity under hyperglycemic conditions, the design of biomaterials for islet transplantation, and the development of 3D-printed placenta models for studying preeclampsia. His work bridges fundamental biophysics with translational applications in regenerative medicine and disease modeling.
Collaborations include partnerships with institutions like Johns Hopkins University and the University of Virginia. His lab’s equipment and methodologies encompass traction force microscopy, Raman imaging, and advanced cell culture systems.
While no personal scientific awards are explicitly listed, his students have received accolades such as ASPIRE awards, reflecting his mentorship excellence. The lab also engages in outreach, hosting summer courses and international workshops, emphasizing education and knowledge dissemination in biophysics.
