Venkat Maruthamuthu

Venkat Maruthamuthu is an Associate Professor in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at Old Dominion University (ODU), affiliated with the Batten College of Engineering & Technology. He holds a B.S./M.S. in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras (2003) and a Ph.D. in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2009). After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Chicago, he joined ODU's faculty in 2014.

with emphasis on mechanotransduction mechanisms and tissue-level mechanical behaviors. Techniques include traction force microscopy, biomaterials engineering, and advanced microscopy to study adhesion dynamics and cytoskeletal mechanics.

Key contributions include elucidating vinculin's role in cell-cell force regulation (2023), exploring elasticity modulation in epithelial cells (2022), and developing biophysical tools for mechanotransduction studies (2017). His work bridges cellular-scale mechanics with tissue-level phenomena.

Recognition includes the American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010), Drickamer Graduate Fellowship (2008), and UIUC Department Fellowship (2003). Active in research laboratories focusing on cellular mechanobiology, he collaborates on projects involving biomaterials and biomedical engineering applications.
