Helgi Gunnlaugsson is a Professor of Criminology and Sociology at the School of Social Sciences, University of Iceland, affiliated with the Faculty of Sociology, Anthropology and Folkloristics. His academic journey began with a BA in Sociology (1982) and a Teacher Certificate (1985) from the University of Iceland, followed by an MA (1990) and PhD (1992) in Sociology and Criminology from the University of Missouri.
His research focuses on criminology, penal policies, and societal issues related to drugs and alcohol. He has contributed to Nordic and European research projects on topics such as the public sense of justice, criminal victimization, and drug legislation, and has collaborated internationally with researchers from South America, Canada, France, and Russia on Arctic and Antarctic sociocultural studies. He authored and co-authored several books, including Wayward Icelanders: Punishment, Boundary Maintenance and the Creation of Crime.
Helgi teaches courses such as Sociology of Deviance, Criminology, and Crime in Iceland. His office is located at Gimli - G-326.
