Prof. Dr. Helge Martens (née Gresch) is a full-time Professor for Biology Education at the University of Kassel since October 2021. Previously, he served as Professor of Biology and its Didactics at the University of Trier (2020–2021) and as Junior Professor for Biology Education at the University of Münster (2015–2020). His academic work focuses on student conceptions in evolutionary education, self-regulated learning, and education for sustainable development, with particular emphasis on video-vignette-based teacher professionalization and metacognitive instruction.

Martens’ research explores teleological student reasoning in evolution education, systemic thinking in sustainability education, and implicit teacher knowledge through video vignettes. His funded projects include a DFG grant (2025–2028) on cognitive biases in evolution education and a Nikolaus Koch Stiftung grant (2021–2024) for a microplastics virtual learning module.
His recent publications (2022–2025) span peer-reviewed journals like Science Education and Evolution: Education and Outreach, addressing topics such as self-assessment in evolution learning, metacognitive awareness, and video-based teacher training. Notable collaborations include work with Tim Hartelt, Jennifer Steinwachs, and Christiane Konnemann.
