Helena Rêgo

Helena Rêgo is a Professor at Nova University Lisbon, where she has lectured and coordinated post-graduate studies on Structured Analytic Techniques and Intelligence. She currently serves as an advisor for the Secretary General of the Portuguese Republic Intelligence System (SGSIRP) since 2020.

• Education: PhD in International Relations (focus: intelligence analysis, security), Master in International Relations (focus: Russian issues), Law Degree from the Classical University of Lisbon.

Research Interests

Helena Rêgo's research focuses on International Relations, Intelligence Analysis, and Security Studies, with expertise in Counter Terrorism, governance, and globalization's impact on security. Her work bridges academic theory with practical intelligence frameworks, emphasizing structured analytic techniques and strategic policy-making.

Her recent publications, spanning 2013-2017, address intelligence governance, security challenges in globalization, and strategic choices for national security, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to contemporary geopolitical dynamics.

Academic & Professional Involvement

Helena has served as an Assistant Professor at the Superior Institute of Political and Social Sciences (1992-2009) and holds teaching experience at multiple institutions. She has been a speaker at international conferences organized by the Institute of National Defense, Estoril Conferences, and institutions in Brazil, Angola, and Sweden. Her career spans decades in Portugal's intelligence community, including leadership roles in counterterrorism and major event security (Expo 98, NATO summits). She has also contributed to post-graduate education through jury participation and tutorial guidance at Nova University Lisbon and other institutions.

Additional Roles

She served as President of the European Council's Terrorism Working Group (2007) and represented SIS in the EU's Anti-Terrorism Coordination Unit (2003-2004). Her professional engagements include training for SIS and SIRP intelligence courses since 1988.
