Dr. Helena Kim is a Senior Research Fellow at La Trobe University's Department of Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology & Pharmacology. She holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Melbourne (2011) and a BBSc(Hons) from the University of Auckland. Her research focuses on stroke pathophysiology, neuroinflammation, and cell-based therapies, with expertise in small animal stroke models and cognitive testing. She has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Brain, Nature Communications, and Stroke.
Dr. Kim's work explores inflammatory mechanisms in ischemic stroke and the therapeutic potential of modulating immune systems to improve cognitive recovery. Her research also addresses sex differences in stroke outcomes and the role of hypertension in cerebrovascular diseases. She has contributed to preclinical studies on amnion epithelial cell therapy and vitamin D supplementation's effects on stroke recovery.
Her research outputs include studies on hypertension-induced neuroinflammation, stroke model analysis using big data approaches, and Phase I clinical trials for cell therapies. Dr. Kim actively supervises HDR students, trains postdoctoral researchers, and reviews for journals in cardiovascular and neurology fields. She collaborates on projects related to stroke, vascular cognitive impairment, and immunology.
