Helena Carvalho is a Full Professor at ISCTE-IUL and Director of the School of Sociology and Public Policy. She holds an Aggregation in Sociology (2013) and a PhD in Sociology from ISCTE (1999). Her research focuses on quantitative methods for categorical variables, including Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA), Nonlinear Principal Component Analysis (CatPCA), and structural equation modeling. She leads the Department of Social Research Methods and is an integrated researcher at CIES-IUL, the Center for Research and Studies in Sociology.
Her education includes a Licenciatura (BSc) in Sociology (1985) and advanced degrees from ISCTE. She specializes in multilevel models, longitudinal analysis, and mediation/moderation techniques. She teaches and coordinates data analysis courses in Master’s and PhD programs.
Her recent work explores institutional trust, media influence, chronic pain management, child socio-emotional development, and retirement transitions. Her articles often bridge quantitative methodologies with societal issues, contributing to fields like health policy, organizational behavior, and education. She collaborates internationally, with studies published in journals like Journal of Pain, Current Psychology, and Media and Journalism.
Her research and teaching emphasize methodological rigor, particularly in handling categorical variables and complex social phenomena. She advises on policy-related research and contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives in sociology, public health, and education.
