Helen Yanacopulos is a Professor at the University of British Columbia (Okanagan Campus), affiliated with the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Department of Economics, Philosophy and Political Science. Her research focuses on International Development, civil society organizations (NGOs), transnational networks, political communication, anti-slavery initiatives, and conflict and development dynamics. She holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge.
Her work explores the roles of NGOs in global governance, the strategies of anti-austerity and anti-slavery movements, and the intersection of technology and development. Key publications include analyses of modern slavery genealogies, South Africa’s international development trajectory, and the governance of genetically modified organisms. She teaches courses on International Development, Global Citizenship, and Conflict Studies.
Yanacopulos has contributed to major reference works on humanitarian communication, human trafficking, and global justice. Her research emphasizes transnational advocacy, NGO influence, and the ethical dimensions of corporate accountability in human rights contexts. She actively supervises graduate students and engages in interdisciplinary collaborations to address complex global challenges.
