Andrea Marie Bertone is a Part-Time Lecturer at George Washington University, where she has taught graduate courses on human trafficking and gender and development since 2006. She serves as Director of FHI 360’s Gender Department, leading strategic initiatives on gender equality and providing technical assistance across global development sectors. Her expertise spans gender integration, international development, human trafficking, and gender-based violence prevention.
Bertone holds a PhD in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland, alongside an MA and BA in related fields. Her research focuses on transnational activism against trafficking, gender equality frameworks, and women's empowerment in education and economic spheres.
Her publications analyze global anti-trafficking movements, regional implications of gender-based violence, and NGO strategies in conflict zones. Notable works include contributions to Human Rights: Politics and Practice (Oxford UP) and analyses of trafficking dynamics in the Western Balkans and Southeast Asia.
Bertone’s career combines over 20 years of fieldwork, project management, and academic instruction. She co-authored girls’ mentoring guides and authored peer-reviewed articles on trafficking prevention mechanisms. Current priorities include implementing FHI 360’s Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Framework 2.0.
