Professor Helen Wheatley is Professor of Film and Television Studies at the University of Warwick, co-founder of the Centre for Television Histories, and Academic Director of the Warwick Institute for Engagement. Her work bridges academic research and public engagement with British broadcasting archives, earning multiple university awards for community impact.
Educational background:
- BA in American and English Literature, University of East Anglia
- MA in Film and Television Studies, University of Warwick
- PhD in Film and Television Studies, University of Warwick
Wheatley's research centers on British television history and historiography, with expertise in Gothic television, landscape programming, death representations, and travelling communities. Her work examines how television constructs visual pleasure through bodies, landscapes, and action, while interrogating archival practices and audience memories.
Publication trends reveal an evolution from genre studies (Gothic television, color broadcasting) toward mortality and memory, culminating in her 2024 monograph Television/Death. Recent work increasingly intersects television studies with trauma theory, feminist historiography, and material culture studies.
Major recognitions:
- BAFTSS Monograph of the Year (2017) for Spectacular Television
- BAFTSS Article of the Year (2021) for "Haunted Television"
- Two University of Warwick Impact/Community Engagement Prizes
- 2012 Arts Impact Award for Pop-Up TV Pop Shop
- Warwick Community Contribution Award for The Story of Children's Television exhibition
Wheatley supervises PhD projects on television history despite current administrative teaching exemptions. She secured significant funding including AHRC support for "A History of Television for Women in Britain" (2010-2014) and AHRB postdoctoral work at Reading (2003-2005), demonstrating sustained research leadership.
She co-founded the Centre for Television Histories and collaborates with institutions like the Herbert Art Gallery on touring exhibitions. Wheatley also shapes the field through editorial roles at Screen, Critical Studies in Television, Intensities, and Revenant.
