Professor Helen Stalford is a Professor of Law at the University of Liverpool's School of Law and Social Justice, part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. She has been with the university since 2000, serving as Head of the Law Department from 2021–2024. Her expertise lies in children’s rights under European law, migration, and access to justice. She holds a LL.B (English and French Law) from the University of Liverpool (1996) and a Ph.D from the University of Leeds (2000).
Her research focuses on children’s rights indicators, child-friendly justice systems, and the impact of EU policies. She leads projects like the European Children’s Rights Unit (ECRU) and coordinates the Faculty’s Children and Childhood research theme. Notable achievements include the SLSA Best Article Prize (2021) and an AHRC Research Fellowship (1997). She co-edits the International Journal of Children’s Rights and collaborates with organizations such as UNICEF and the Council of Europe.
Grants include AHRC funding for the Children’s Rights Judgments Project (2015–2018) and ESRC support for studies on unaccompanied asylum seekers during the pandemic. Her work emphasizes participatory approaches, including Liverpool’s Young Person’s Advisory Group and trauma-informed research practices.
