Dr. Helen Simmons is a Senior Lecturer in Education (Childhood, Youth and Families) at the University of Northampton's Childhood, Youth and Families Centre for Education and Research. With nearly 20 years in education, she specializes in early childhood studies, focusing on family support, modern motherhood, and workforce development. She holds a DProf in Education from the University of Derby (2019), an MA from Warwick (2008), PGCE from Wolverhampton (2004), and a BA in Childhood Studies from Liverpool John Moores (2001).
Her research explores sociological aspects of childhood, pressures on modern mothers, and reflective early childhood practice. She co-leads the 'Families and Communities' SIG and is Vice Chair (Policy) of the Early Childhood Studies Degrees Network (ECSDN). Recent projects include MotS2: Moving on to School 2 (2022), addressing special educational needs and transitions. She has authored monographs and edited volumes, including Surveillance of Modern Motherhood (2020) and Partnership with Parents in Early Childhood Today (2023).
Her work spans parenting policy critique, student practitioner development, and workforce advocacy. Awards include Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She contributes to media discussions on early years education and serves as an External Examiner at Liverpool John Moores University. Her activities include organizing conferences, podcast series (Golden Threads), and peer-review roles.
Current initiatives focus on marginalized voices in education, inclusive policies, and family-centered practices. She collaborates with teams to advance early childhood education equity and workforce resilience.
