Helen Peterson is a Professor of Sociology at Örebro University since 2020, affiliated with the Department of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences. She holds a PhD from Uppsala University (2005) and has held roles including Associate Professor (Uppsala University, 2012), Visiting Scholar at New York University (2013–2015), and leadership in research projects on gender equality in academia and voluntary childlessness.
Research Focus: Her work centers on gender dynamics in organizations, leadership, and policy implementation, particularly in higher education. Key themes include gender mainstreaming, academic career trajectories, and the intersection of work and family life. She has pioneered studies on voluntary childlessness, exploring societal norms around motherhood and pronatalism.
Current Projects: Includes FORTE-funded work on gender mainstreaming in Swedish universities (with Birgitta Jordansson), Formas-funded research on minimalist family practices, and leadership of the ALUMNII network on academic leadership challenges. She coordinates the research group 'Work, Family and Close Relationships.'
Teaching: Focuses on courses in work sociology, organizational studies, and gender theory.
Publications: Over 50 peer-reviewed articles and books, including Gender in Transnational Knowledge Work (2017) and contributions to journals like Journal of Gender Studies and Science and Public Policy.
