Dr. Helen Marshall is an Honorary University Fellow at RMIT University's School of Global, Urban and Social Studies (GUSS). She holds a PhD in Sociology from Monash University and has over three decades of experience in education and research. Previously a secondary school and post-secondary college teacher, she transitioned to a research role in 2006 as part of the Centre for Applied Social Research. Her work focuses on qualitative research methodologies, particularly the use of NVivo software for data analysis. She has led national projects on sociology education, including initiatives for the Carrick Institute and TASA (2008–2009). A prominent figure in sociological research, she authored Not Having Families (Oxford University Press, 1993), which emerged from her doctoral thesis on voluntary childlessness. She also contributed to a textbook on the sociology of deviance and edited the electronic Qualitative Research Journal for the Association for Qualitative Research. Her research interests span sociology, communications technologies, cultural studies, policy administration, and gender studies.
