Dr Helen Lorna Blakely is a Research Fellow at Cardiff University’s School of Social Sciences, affiliated with the Wales Institute of Social Economic Research Data and Methods (WISERD). Her work focuses on empirical and theoretical studies of work, welfare, and citizenship, employing ethnographic and interview-based methodologies. Dr Blakely currently leads as a Co-Investigator on WISERD’s ESRC Centre on Civil Society, examining precarious work in foundational economies and grassroots trade union organizing. She collaborates on research in India’s urban factory districts, funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund, addressing garment workers’ labor rights. She is an editor of Qualitative Research, emphasizing methodological innovation.
Education: PhD in Social Science from Cardiff University (2011), focusing on welfare reform’s impact on mothers in South Wales. Professional roles include over a decade with WISERD since 2015.
Research interests span labor rights, civil society dynamics, and qualitative methods. Recent projects include analyses of flexible working policies and union renewal, documented in publications such as British Journal of Industrial Relations and Social Policy and Administration.
Publications highlight themes of global labor movements, policy alignment with political ideologies, and memory practices. Her work often bridges theoretical frameworks with applied research, contributing to both academic discourse and policy advocacy.
