Professor Helen L. Ball is a distinguished academic in the Department of Anthropology at Durham University, renowned for her pioneering research on infant sleep safety and Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI). She directs the Durham Infancy and Sleep Centre and contributes to the Anthropology of Health research group and Wolfson Research Institute.
Her research integrates evolutionary anthropology with socio-cultural perspectives to examine infant sleep practices, co-sleeping dynamics, breastfeeding relationships, and circadian rhythm development. This work has directly influenced global health policies, including Unicef UK's Baby Friendly Initiative and the National Institute for Health & Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines on postnatal care.
