Dr. Helen Berents is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Griffith University's School of Government and International Relations, Australia. She holds a PhD from the University of Queensland and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research focuses on youth agency in conflict and peacebuilding, particularly the Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) agenda. She leads projects funded by the Australian Research Council (DECRA Fellowship 2020-2024) and collaborates with global institutions like the Swedish Folke Bernadotte Academy and the Arab Reform Initiative.
Her work emphasizes feminist approaches to peace studies and critical security theories. She co-edits Critical Studies on Security and directs the Youth, Peace & Security Observer newsletter. Key affiliations include Griffith Asia Institute and the Global Coalition on YPS. Berents has published widely on youth advocacy, including books like Young People and Everyday Peace and co-edited volumes addressing global childhoods and sustainable peacebuilding.
Her funded research includes developing youth-led indicators for the YPS agenda (Carnegie Trust 2024-2025) and investigating intergenerational engagement in peace processes. She advises doctoral candidates on topics like Myanmar's peace dynamics and Southeast Asian YPS frameworks. Berents advocates for ethical, participatory research methodologies, reflecting her commitment to marginalized communities in insecure environments.
